Welfare Benefits Overview (Young People)
This course provides an overview of the benefits system and addresses the key benefits issues that affect young people aged between 16 and 21 who are at risk of homelessness.
By the end of the course participants will:
Understand how the benefits system is structured and the different types of benefits that make up the system;
Be aware of the main entitlement conditions for each of the benefits in the wider system;
Have an awareness of common issues affecting young people aged between 16 and 21;
Be able to help people make a claim to Universal Credit and manage the claim thereafter;
Know how packages of entitlements can be claimed together and how different benefits interact;
Be able to maximise income by identifying entitlement and helping people make effective benefit applications;
Be aware of the process for challenging a benefits decision including how to start an appeal;
Have access to advice regarding any benefits-related question for 12 months after the course.
Methods of delivery
This is a practical course. It is delivered using a combination of trainer presentation, group work and exercises, case studies, group discussion and games.
This course is important for those who are new to benefits or who need a refresher and who work with vulnerable young people or are either homeless or at risk of homelessness.
