Course aims
This course provides a comprehensive and practical guide to Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and how limited capability for work affects Universal Credit. It looks at the assessment process and how to trouble-shoot typical problems.
Course objectives
By the end of the course participants will:

Know who can claim ESA and/or UC because they are currently unable to work;

Understand the ESA/UC claims process;

Be able to use the Work Capability Assessment criteria effectively;

Know how to get ESA payments restarted when they are stopped following a failure to return forms and/or attend a medical appointment;

Be able to guide claimants through the appeals process;

Be aware of the options for returning to work in both legacy benefits and Universal Credit;

Have an awareness of how and when ESA claimants are likely to be affected by Universal Credit;

Have access to advice regarding any course-related question for 12 months after the course.
Methods of delivery
The course will be delivered using a combination of trainer presentation, group work and exercises, case studies and games.
