Part 1: The structure of the system

By the end of this module participants will:

·      Understand how the benefits system is structured and the differences between contributory, non-contributory and means tested benefits;

·      Know who can claim each of the benefits which make up the system.

Part 2: The importance of health & disability-related benefits

By the end of this module participants will:

·      Be able to help people claim a work related benefit when they cannot work due to a health condition or a disability; 

·      Be able to help people of all ages claim a disability benefit when their every day lives are affected by a health condition or a disability. 

Part 3: Universal Credit and the wider system

By the end of this module participants will:

·      Understand who should claim Universal Credit; 

·      Be aware of how a claim to Universal Credit affects other benefits in the wider system.

Part 4: Maximising income from benefits

By the end of this module participants will:

·      Be able to complete a basic benefits check to ensure people are claiming their likely entitlements; 

·      Be able to get calculations done; 

·      Know how to check that a decision is correct and what to do if it is not. 

 

Methods of delivery

Each part (module) of this course is delivered online live with a Benefits Training Co. trainer. It is a practical course delivered using a combination of trainer presentation, exercises and case studies, group discussion and games. Participants will be provided with e-learning supporting material including PowerPoint slides and a comprehensive training pack as well as access to a recording of the course module for a limited time after the course.

 

Intended audience

This course is for staff who are new to benefits or who need a refresher of the basics. No previous experience is required. 

 

What you will need

Participants will need a Wi-Fi connection and a suitable device to access the internet. Prior to the event, participants will receive an email with a link which they should use to join the event as well as a pdf of the training pack and slides which should be accessible (either printed or downloaded to a computer or another device) throughout each module.

 

Certificates & post course support

Participants will receive an e-certificate for completing Parts 1-4 of this Benefits Training Co. course. This also guarantees eligibility to access our free 12 months post-course advice service (including priority entry to free webinars).
