Welfare Benefits Overview (Disability)
This course provides an overview of the benefits and tax credits system with a focus on disability and health. Following the course participants are able to identify benefits and complete an income maximisation check for the people they work with.
By the end of the course participants will:
Understand how the benefits system is structured and the differences between contributory, non-contributory and means tested benefits;
Know who can claim each of the benefits which make up the system;
Have an awareness of common issues affecting people when claiming health and disability benefits;
Understand how Universal Credit affects the wider system;
Know how packages of entitlements can be claimed together;
Be able to complete basic benefit checks to ensure people are claiming their likely entitlements;
Be able to give basic advice up to the stage of challenging a benefit entitlement decision;
Have access to advice regarding any benefits-related question for 12 months after the course.
Methods of delivery
This is a practical course. It is delivered using a combination of trainer presentation, group work and exercises, case studies, group discussion and games.
This course is important for people who are new to the benefits system or who need a refresher. The course focuses on income maximisation when working with people of working and of non-working age, particularly those with ongoing health conditions and their carers.
